To really highlight how low the TV budget was, when the two pilot’s parachute from their planes, the blue screen processing as they start shooting pistols at each other in mid air, is almost childishly poor. (I should probably point out that Lyle Waggoner screen tested for Batman in 1966, the footage is on YouTube.)Īs Steve starts his dogfight in the air against Eric Braeden’s Captain Drangel, the footage cuts, rather hopelessly, from colour to black and white and back (not even a hint of tinted or colourising!) which really doesn’t work at all. Whilst we’re on the subject of Nazi double agents penetrating the country’s intimate circle…Blankenship…beautiful American name.

Steve’s boss, General Blankenship, is here played by John Randolph (he was replaced in the regular series by Richard Eastham). In terms of spoof-o-city, it’s pitched just above Airplane! but below Get Smart! Stella Stevens (from The Poseidon Adventure) plays a Nazi double agent who is seemingly both boning and trying to kill Steve Trevor at the same time. It was subtle, not over egged (although it edged its way to the edge of the egg-cliff with alarming speed in later episodes!). Trevor and co at the Air Corp are played with just the right amount of corn for it not to fall in to lampoon territory, like Batman ’66.
DVD releases, also, simply called the show after the main character. It’s worth noting that the onscreen title is simply “Wonder Woman” rather than the weird, overly long actual title that the series was always referred to as (“The New Original Wonder Woman”) which only existed to separate it from the 1974 Crosby movie. It quickly became a trope of this series that Lynda Carter would end each show with a smiling close up, so it could easily have become a ‘thing’. I’d like to have seen the glints on WW’s teeth at the end of each episode rather like Simon Templar’s animated halo that would appear above Roger Moore in his introduction at the start of episodes of The Saint (1962 – 1969).
Lyle Waggoner as Steve Trevor also has animated shining glints on his teeth. We’re introduced to Lynda Carter, all smiling and proud with animated glints of light in her eyes. Suddenly we hit the comic-book inspired main titles by Phill Norman, immediately reminiscent of the opening animations used for Batman’s TV show in 1966. Cramer, they had searched all over Hollywood looking for someone that could do a decent impersonation of Roosevelt. According to WW Executive Producer, Douglas S. The narration, supposedly the voice of FDR himself, was by Paul Frees, an actor who had been the voice of authority and scary alien invaders since the 1950s (hit yourself repeatedly in the throat and say “People of Earth, attention!”), usually doing the job in the style of, but for a smaller wage packet than, Orson Welles.

We begin with several grainy archive newsreel shots of your actual Nigel Farage-wannabe Adolf Hitler and the then U.S. Diana comes out on top and, dressed in an indestructible bathing suit designed to show allegiance to the US flag, she returns Trevor and helps him plug the Nazi-leak in his own department in the war office.
The Queen holds an athletics contest to decide which of the population of super-perfect, immortal women should escort Trevor back to Washington D.C. He is nursed back to health by Diana, the princess daughter of Queen Hippolyta, the ruler of the island’s all-female population of Amazonians (or should that be Bermudians?). He succeeds (with the help of some handy sharks…don’t ask) but lands, near to death, on the uncharted Paradise Island (30 years before the Bounty hunters were even looking for it).

Air Corp Intelligence is tasked with shooting down a crack Nazi pilot over the Bermuda Triangle (what could possibly go wrong with that plan?). It’s 1942 and Major Steve Trevor from the U.S. If that was Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel, welcome back to the grass roots of Superman and the Mole-Men! Back to basics, the storyline from the comics, the original costume, the WW2 setting, no more 70s track suits, finally it all comes together in one fun, bouncy, cherub-cheeked package.
